Iberian Lynx Summer Special
For the past decade, I have been searching for and photographing the elusive and vulnerable Iberian Lynx. In 2014, their population had dwindled to just a few hundred, putting them on the brink of extinction. However, thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, their numbers have steadily grown to over two thousand, offering hope for the species’ future.
Now is an opportune time to attempt photographing them in areas where they have been successfully reintroduced and have thrived for several generations. This trip is entirely hide-based, with two carefully selected locations to maximize your chances of success.
As with all wildlife photography, sightings are never guaranteed, but we have worked hard to provide the best possible opportunities for a rewarding experience. This is especially true with lynx photography, where patience is essential. Our chosen locations have been tried and tested to give you the highest chance of success.
The trip itself is not physically demanding, as no hiking is required. However, the warm summer temperatures mean we’ll need to be prepared for heat, which can occasionally exceed 40°C. We will visit the hides at dawn and late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. Each session will last 3-4 hours, so some endurance is required.
The appearance of the lynx is unpredictable and can occur at any time throughout the day. In the quieter moments, other wildlife may visit the waterholes near the hides. You can expect to see species such as the Red-legged Partridge, Turtle Dove, Iberian Green Woodpecker, Thekla’s Lark, Corn Bunting, Azure-winged Magpie, Hoopoe, and even the occasional Little Owl.
This trip offers an incredible opportunity to witness and document a species that has made a remarkable recovery from the edge of extinction just over a decade ago.
